Have you allowed yourself to notice momentum?
Business management expert and author Jim Collins first mentioned the “flywheel” concept in his business bestseller Built to Last. And then in 2017, he wrote an entire book on the subject: Turning the Flywheel. In a nut shell: As leaders, we have ideas that require us to push with great effort, yet we only see things inch forward. Then the idea starts to roll in the right direction, and we have to push even harder…until eventually, the idea takes on its own energy. At that point, you get the BREAKTHROUGH. You realize the idea, like a wheel, turns with its own energy.
In business, we see our big ideas gain momentum and move on their own once a team is aligned around them. Are you noticing that momentum, the areas you don’t have to push as hard to get adoption?
As coaches, we often ask our clients to notice the moments when they feel their “inner smile.” It’s that satisfying moment when you see the slightest sign that people “get it”. You can feel the flywheel starting to turn. It’s a private moment–a booster shot of energy that provides you with the intrinsic reward of being a leader. Being a team leader is an awesome experience that seldom is described as “easy,” but when you take the time to notice the flywheel starting to move and appreciate it, that’s goodness. Savor this moment. It will propel great results this year and beyond.
