Coaching helps produce excellence. That’s why I really like being a coach. And why I admire Jerry Kill, the football coach at the University of Minnesota. We are sharing the stage at the Performance Excellence Network Annual Conference in April – will you join us?
Every once in a while we find ourselves basking in the glow of true excellence: a play at the Guthrie Theatre, a sculpture at the Getty Museum, a soprano at the Metropolitan Opera. Lately, the Minnesota Gophers football team at TCF Stadium stirs my aspirations because everything about Coach Kill’s program exudes excellence, generosity, fairness and positivity. He’s a good leader who produces excellence.

I’m thrilled to be sharing the stage at the PEN Works conference – April 27 and 28 – presented by the members of the Performance Excellence Network. The PEN organization rose from the quality movement established by Malcolm Baldrige in the 1960s. The two-day conference features insightful workshops and inspiring stories of Baldrige Award Winners .
The President of PEN, Brian Lassiter, is an enthusiastic evangelist of workshops, peer groups and conferences that promote the core idea that organizations need good leadership to produce excellence. He’s created an impressive non-profit resource network to help the science of quality multiply throughout business.
How Good Leadership Matters
“PEN has over 20 subject-matter and channel partners, each with their own strengths and assets,” explained Brian Lassiter. We partner with Good Leadership because Paul and his team are improving leadership and lifting organizations to excellence.”

Coach Kill and I have very little in common…except we are excited about excellence and we both believe that Goodness Pays!
My role in the PEN Works Conference will be to bring the Good Leadership point of view to life, and to share data about how our proprietary Team Momentum Survey is producing excellence in healthcare and financial services. Here are some of the other outstanding presenters:
- Scott McIntyre, CEO of PricewaterhouseCoopers Public Sector, from Virginia
- David Huffstutler, CEO of St. David’s Health System, from Texas
- Gerry Agnes, CEO of Elevations Credit Union, from Colorado
- Jayne Pope, CEO of Country Memorial Hospital, from Texas
Good leaders are inspired by role models who help us believe in what’s possible. And they are energized by like-minded leaders who exude excellence.
Please share with me: Who is a good leader around you who exudes excellence?
