Dan Mehls -- the guy who built Target Field

Take Me Out to the Ball Game! That song will resound with renewed pride and vigor when the Minnesota Twins begin the 2010 season on real grass, in open air. This week I had the opportunity (gift) of touring Target Field, the Minnesota Twins new home with 100 other members of the Minneapolis City of Lakes Rotary Club. My heart raced with stunning visions of the Minneapolis skyline, the intimacy of the seating from every viewing angle and the artistic detail that rivals my favorite museums. Wow!

The tour was hosted by my friend, and really Good leader, Dan Mehls. Dan is the project manager representing Mortenson Construction. Over the course of three years he orchestrated an intricate dance of concrete, earth, glass and steel. Under his direction, more than 3000 workers built the world’s finest baseball stadium constructed on the infrastructure of two city blocks. Target field was built ahead of schedule and under budget. So how did Dan do that?

The project was built on trust, established with one simple Success Habit. Dan met with the owner’s representative and the chief architect for breakfast every Wednesday morning during the project. Over the course of three years the trio celebrated small wins, suggested improvements and openly discussed the brutal realities. The conversations were direct, honest, respectful and fueled with the purpose that this project was truly special.

Hey Dad! I'm in the Twins Dugout!

When I stepped out of the Twins dugout, onto the burnt chestnut infield dirt I felt the purpose of their work. Now, sing along: Take Me Out to the Ball Game… I can’t wait to be a part of the crowd.[/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]
