How Do Business Operations Help Win Basketball Games?

Ethan Casson has a dream job. He’s the CEO of the Minnesota Timberwolves and Lynx. And he will be the first person to tell you not all of those dreams are rosy. This year, both teams have been winning, and the organization was nominated for one of the highest honors in all of professional sports. And at the same time, the future of the ownership is being decided in the court of law.

Welcome back to the Good Leadership Breakfast series, where we highlight good leaders making great things happen in their communities and their industries. The theme of the fall series is something Good Leadership has been talking about a lot this year: Building a Culture of Healthy Accountability. Ethan Casson, kicks off the fall series on Friday, September 20.

Accountability through Ethan

Ethan is no stranger to leading high-performing teams and driving organizational success. Now in his eighth season as CEO of the Timberwolves, Ethan works closely with ownership and the executive team to set the strategic vision for these world-class sports franchises. Prior to this job, he led business operations for the San Francisco 49ers, in the National Football League.

“We’re winning on the court today, because we did the hard work to get aligned on how we engage with our fans, with our partners, and our leaders in both business and basketball,” he shared. “It’s about investing in deep, empathetic relationships where people understand how we need to help each other, so we can thrive and win together.”

Personally, what I’ve learned from Ethan, is how well he holds people to high standards without applying pressure, or punitive measures. He creates healthy accountability by creating an environment where everyone is empowered to achieve their best, knowing they have the support and trust of their leaders.
