We’ve all had “ah-ha” moments. The ah-ha is “catharsis”—the process of releasing negative emotions or frustration in ways that create a positive, inspirational boost. Sometimes, those cathartic shifts happen in the normal course of business. And sometimes, they need to be structured moments for learning. That’s why Good Leadership chose the “workshop” format to bring the recent Healthy Accountability research to life.
Important Learning from the Research
Accountability that feels positive or healthy is a concept that is elusive at best and a complex mess of inconsistent leadership at worst. However, the research pointed to some simple steps that can be taken to make quick improvements toward a culture of healthy accountability. The best environment to create positive momentum is to assemble a group of employees who share a similar frustration with a business issue – like fuzzy, inconsistent accountability.
The workshop formula that works the best: O x D = U2.
- The “O” is Opportunity—it’s the collective excitement and hope that comes from thinking about “What’s possible?” if we learned to do something better or different.
- “D” is Dissatisfaction—it’s the frustration (or anger?) that builds up when the same negative things keep happening over and over again. Eventually, we get motivated enough to interrupt the cycle.
- The “U2” is Urgency Squared—in an organizational setting, a sense of urgency that lives in only one person causes nothing to change. Significant change and improvement only happen when a leader finds other leaders who are aligned and equally motivated to make something new happen.
Healthy Accountability Workshops
There are two forms of workshops that bring the Healthy Accountability Research to life: the Basic workshop and the Tailored workshop. Each includes information from the general survey, with decisions about how to prioritize the next steps to take along the Pathway to Healthy Accountability™. The “Tailored” workshop is longer and more specific, because their organization has taken the Healthy Accountability Survey in advance – it jumps starts the convesration with the first-hand observations by real employees.
The Good Leadership team is gearing up for a steady flow of Healthy Accountability Workshops – there are 8 scheduled in January alone – some in-person and others virtual. All designed to produce a “U2” sense of urgency, because of a motivating “cathartic shift!”
