I enjoy noticing the coexistence of ancient wisdom and modern miracles. That happened last week as my coaching colleague Kristi and I co-facilitated a leadership retreat in Costa Rica. My favorite ancient wisdom comes alive whenever I visit an ocean – somehow the vast open water and the roar of the surf brings alive the mind-body-soul connection articulated by the Egyptians more than 4000 years ago.
To state the obvious, living in Minnesota it takes a modern miracle for me to experience the ancient sound of the ocean surf. That highlights “airplane travel” as my favorite modern miracle! With every successful take-off and landing, I say a prayer of gratitude for the daring souls of the Wright brothers who invented the airplane. And for the pilots of today who use the principles of lift and thrust to fly me to faraway places, to meet people who radiate goodness.
A Lot of Miracles Lately
Within the last six weeks, my journey of spreading goodness has included miraculous flights to Kansas City, Detriot, St. Louis, Los Angeles and Fresno, last week to Costa Rica, and yesterday to Indianapolis. And always back home. That’s a lot of miracles!
Talking about business travel this weekend with a friend, he said: I don’t know how you do it!? It’s easy for me when I concentrate on the “miracle” and our “mission.” Yes, travel delays caused by weather and mechanical difficulties can be aggravating. But when we are talking about goodness and good leadership, I always feel an awesome sense of connection to the people I meet at my destination. And I’m always amazed by the modern miracle of flight.
The Seven Fs Help Keep Me Grounded
Which brings me back to the ancient wisdom: to keep up with the rigors of the travel my coach helped me organize my life around strengthening my mind-body-soul connection. By now you know I think of that connection as blending the Seven Fs: faith, family, finances, fitness, friends, fun, & future. Airplane travel is easier when I have good reading that strengthens my spirit, exercise routines to ensure I sleep well, and a well-charged smart-phone to keep in touch with family and friends.
Good leaders live a grateful life, by giving thanks for the modern miracles in their lives. And they organize their routines in ways that strengthen their faith, family, finances, fitness, friends, fun, & future.
Please share with me: What is your favorite modern miracle?
