From Silicon Valley to the Star Tribune: The Reinvention of Steve Grove

The Spring 2026 Good Leadership Breakfast Series begins with a leader who knows a thing or two about transformation. Steve Grove, CEO and Publisher of the Minnesota Star Tribune, has been on a remarkable journey from Silicon Valley to the State Capitol, and now to the helm of Minnesota’s most iconic newsroom. His story is a masterclass in reinvention.

Innovation Meets Public Service

After starting a career in journalism, he followed the spark of innovation to YouTube and Google, where he built new platforms to strengthen civic engagement and elevate trustworthy news. Then, in a bold pivot, he stepped into public service during one of the most uncertain economic moments in Minnesota’s history. As Commissioner of Employment and Economic Development under Governor Tim Walz, Grove led with clarity and calm through the pandemic years.

A Vision for Trusted News

Today, Steve brings that same steady, forward-looking leadership to the Star Tribune, working to turn it into the leading model for local news in America. At a time when journalism is under pressure from all sides, he is helping to redefine what it means to serve a community with truth.

Rooted in Minnesota Values

Steve grew up in Northfield, Minnesota, and came back home to raise a family, start a nonprofit, and put down roots in a place he believes in. He recently published a memoir, How I Found Myself in the Midwest, where he reveals the vulnerability and insight of a leader who’s not afraid to ask big questions and make big changes.

What to Expect on February 27

At the February 27 Good Leadership Breakfast, Steve Grove will share what healthy accountability looks like in the world of journalism, why trust is the most valuable currency for leaders today, and how bold reinvention can fuel both personal growth and institutional transformation.

This is a conversation worth experiencing. You can reserve your spot here.
