Have you ever finished something so big, you had to take a breath before you could even talk about it? That’s where I am today. After two years of research, writing, and revising, the Good Leadership Team has officially finished the Healthy Accountability book. It would not have happened without a solid flight plan.
Flight Planning Made it Possible
One research interview introduced the idea of “Flight Planning” as a key to the Healthy Accountability Research. The metaphor of “Only one pilot lands the plane” reminds people the need for role clarity, teamwork and sharing expertise to ensure a safe flight. It’s also a pointed criticism in how many corporate projects often launch without clear direction, unlike an airplane that never leaves the runway without a plan.
Writing this book was no different. We promised the early run of the book to specific clients and the research steering team before the end of September. To get the project off the ground—and land well—it took the very same flight planning disciplines:
Clear destination: Define Healthy Accountability and equip leaders with practical tools to build a culture where accountability is healthy, so people can win together.
Land on time: Printing by mid-September meant finishing by mid-August.
Anticipate changes in weather: Lots of things knocked us off course – new and evolving client work, ideological collisions, internal shifts in priorities, and even some moments of doubt.
A strong crew: Co-pilot Kevin Sensenig, navigator Matt Tappe, manager of the research project Kara Dalecki, Teresa Lombard for keeping the team on track to meet the deadline, and the whole team at Good Leadership who brought insights and momentum every step of the way.
Passengers with a vested interest: Clients, coaches, and leaders who believe this message will be transformational. Their stories and feedback fueled the journey.
This is the biggest project the Good Leadership team has launched to date. It may very well be career-defining. And like any successful flight, it wouldn’t have landed without the people who planned it together.
Goodness Continues to Grow
Goodness grows when the team learns from clients today, and then pass those lessons along to others tomorrow. That’s the heartbeat of Good Leadership, and it’s what makes this research and book much more than a milestone. It’s a platform for helping leaders embrace Healthy Accountability and create teams where people enjoy their work and get great results.
The book will officially launch this November—but pre-orders are open now, here. To jump start your journey on the Pathway to Healthy Accountability, get a copy for all of your people managers. And then let them soar.
