This morning I’m happy. More so than other days. Because yesterday we hosted the Knicker Open charity golf tournament for the benefit of The Boys and Girls Club of the Twin Cities. We are celebrating exceptional teamwork and the spirit of living generously.
More than 130 golfers – all magnificently dressed in knickers – demonstrated a loosely choreographed swing dance around Minnesota Valley Country Club.
Why Knickers?
In 1992 custom clothier, King Bavender, invited a group of distinguished gentlemen to play golf in knickers to honor the one year anniversary of Payne Stewart’s US Open victory at Hazeltine National Golf Course. Payne Stewart won the tournament on a Monday playoff, famously wearing an outfit featuring knickers. That set the happy tradition in motion.

As of yesterday, the Knicker Open tradition has contributed more than $900,000 to support the growth and prosperity of kids who depend on the Boys and Girls Club for their livelihood.
Happy hour for the kids!
Following the tournament, the Barbary Coast Dixieland Band welcomed golfers and guests to the Good Leadership Happy Hour – what joy! Sports author and humorist Ross Bernstein was our speaker, King Bavender presented fashion awards, and Michael Anschel congratulated the golfing champions. And we passed the Bucket of Good Will collecting cash donations totaling more than $3,000.

The early returns point to approximately $50,000 raised for the 13,000 kids supported by the Boys and Girls Club of the Twin Cities. We are celebrating the teamwork of the City of Lakes Rotary Club and more than 30 sponsoring organizations.
How can you multiply your happiness?
One of the Cornerstones of Goodness in leadership is living generously. Every morning I focus on where the happiness is growing in my life – because what we concentrate on grows! This morning, I’m grateful for the opportunity to spread goodness by golfing in knickers!
Good leaders embrace the whimsical side of life and step out of their comfort zone. And they multiply their happiness by generously supporting charities which create a brighter future for kids.
