‘Rock Star’ is the grandest term of endearment within one of our
next generations — to be called a Rock Star trumps all.

Faith Statement Sunday is my favorite day of worship at Diamond Lake
Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. Its the one day of the year we
seasoned (weathered?) adults roll out the red carpet for the 9th grade
confirmands — the Rock Stars. Its a tough ticket…the little
kids hip check and elbow their way through the crowd battling for a
front row spot to oogle at the big kids. With hearts pounding,
each Rock Star gets their own private, courageous moment on stage to
share their most intimate thoughts about their faith journey.
Each year, the themes are consistent: ballads of fear and skepticism,
hard-driving beats of optimism and harmonies of friends and
family. And love songs about hugs from God. How much courage would
it take from us, the seasoned (weathered?) adults to grab the mic in
the moment of truth. Could we share our inner most hopes for peace, to
be welcomed and be welcoming, our passion for helping others and our
yearning for forgiveness? Would you, could you, grab the moment
and be a Rock Star?
Its clear to me today that no two people have the same understanding
of Faith. And not everyone is called to be a Rock Star. But
we have a profound responsibility to help our young adults to feel the
giant hug of an entire congregation. We are all invested in their
success. We need their electric burst of hope that one day all
people will live 24/7 lives of peace, forgiveness and love. In the
afterglow, as we roll up the red carpet — I feel grounded in the notion
that our future is in good hands with these Rock Stars.[/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]
